At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
