EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
