Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
