The megacity Rises to Dangerous Smog Post Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Readings

Several parts of the city registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended limit set by the global health authority.

In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times above acceptable standards.

Fireworks Ban and New Changes

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that covers the city as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed regional government petitioned the highest court to propose a relaxation of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically doubted by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Reality

To the disappointment of environmental and health advocates, the court complied with the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific periods throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Numerous recording stations throughout the capital showed air quality spiking around late evening to extremely hazardous readings seen during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Regional Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a controversy with adjacent the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming worsening pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants coming from across the border following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Problem

The dangerously high levels of air contamination in the city have remained as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Diverse Contamination Contributors

The problem in the city is resulting from a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in nearby areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as colder air sets in.

Medical and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the capital region is substantial, according to multiple research.

This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand premature deaths each year in Delhi.
